Gestalt Language Processing (GLP) describes how some children learn language in whole phrases or "gestalts" rather than individual words.
Characteristics include:
-Memorizing and using entire phrases or scripts
-Often linked to echolalia (repeating words/phrases)
-May use phrases from songs, books, or TV shows
-Speech can have varied intonation, sounding song-like
-Can occur in both neurotypical and neurodivergent individuals
-Not always indicative of language delay
-Therapy is typically child-centered and connection-based
Not all gestalt language processors are delayed. This can be determinded by a Speech Language Pathologist trained in gestalt language evaluations and treatment.
